René McCrette
René McCrette is a digital and video artist based in Montreal. McCrette's practice investigates the instability of self-representation in networked culture. McCrette's work uses telecommunication technology and widely accessible apps, beginning with algorithmically inspired selfies, to distort, multiply, and transform this content into hypnotic short-form videos. Drawing from early internet visual culture—GIFs, viral clips, and anonymous DIY media, McCrette embraces immediacy, artifice, and repetition as aesthetic strategies. Rather than critiquing influencer imagery from the outside, McCrette amplifies its codes to reveal how identity is staged and re-performed across platforms. McCrette's work hovers between seduction and subversion, intimacy and simulation, questioning where entertainment ends and art begins. By using everyday tools as both medium and subject, McCrette highlights the creative and conceptual potential embedded in ordinary digital technologies.
