Letter from the Editor

by Sterling Davis

In the last fortnight, many shocking things that would have seemed risible only four years ago have oozed into our public life. I don't presume to gaze, as through a mirror, into the hearts of men. However, I will always be on the side of freedom. I ask all my readers to examine their conscience and their orientation toward freedom. The Roman philosopher Seneca once observed, "all cruelty springs from weakness." And remember this. History teaches us that those who foolishly accrue power at the expense of the freedom of others often end in an intractable position. That is because human nature is intransigent. If one seeks to ride on the back of the tiger and destroy the freedom of others, as quickly as the life of mortal man, you or someone you love could, as it were, end up on the wrong side of that same power. The very tiger you fed could consume you and all posterity. One of the highest values of art, in my estimation, is connectivity. Through art, we can connect, at a human level, to people and ideas that have previously been inaccessible. Art is freedom. And the ability to appreciate art is the good life. That is why the editorial policy of this journal will always be to affirm free artistic expression in every dimension. Freedom is a gift that we must all protect. At Poetries in English Magazine: Our Brand is Freedom.
